A Collaborative Performance
The Carriage House, Golden Street, New London, CT 2009
Dancer and Choreographer: Kristin Cawley-Gill
Musician, flautist: Kiara Hwang
Poet: Michael Bradford
Sculptural Installation and Photographer: Diane Barceló
Dance consultant: Libby Nye
This performance took place in the display window of a former carriage house and furniture store on Golden Street in New London, CT.
The audience stood in the street. The poet read his work while the flautist riffed on his words and the dancer moved to the choreography she developed based on the installation shown here.
The Installation consists of a series of brooms made from local cedar branches and river grass collected at Alewife Cove in New London.
They were bound with string and held in place with melted beeswax then suspended from the ceiling in front of 6’ tall altered photographs of a young girl jumping rope.
The poem, “Fly Away Home”, by Michael Bradford speaks in magical terms of returning over the ocean to the motherland, Africa.
